After the downpours that hit California in the first months of 2023, the traditional New Orleans-inspired party in Long Beach was postponed from its usual schedule. The SoCal-style celebration eventually took place few weeks later, on March 18th.

The Lunar New Year represents one of the most important and popular celebrations that take place in Asian communities, symbolizing not only a time of family reunion, but also the attraction of good fortune.

In 2023, as part of an independent project, I had the opportunity to document the customs and traditions for celebrating the Lunar New Year in Chinatown, Los Angeles, where is the largest Asian community in the United States.

A Brazilian song says that Cariocas, those born in Rio de Janeiro, do not like cloudy days. This work shows how the Carioca’s light spirit makes any cloudy sky a fun day at the beach.
